ICML 2009: Continuing Education: 'Authorship Skills' for Health Information Professionals

Biography: Lenny Rhine is University Librarian Emeritus, University of Florida, USA. For 30 years, he was collection development librarian at the Health Science Center Library (UF). Starting in 1992, Lenny began working with the University of Zambia Medical Library and subsequently with the Association for Health Information and Libraries in Africa (AHILA). He has conducted numerous workshops and presentations predominantly on IT applications for the delivery of health information in low-income countries.
Lenny currently is the compiler of the Essential Health Links, a gateway of 700+ websites for health practitioners in low-income countries. He also is a trainer and training materials developer for HINARI, a collaborative World Health Organization and STM Publishers' project that enables institutions in developing and emerging countries to gain access to over 5000 biomedical and health journals.

Session:

Objective: The objective of this course is to develop skills to facilitate authoring papers in peer-reviewed/ health and health-information related journals.  Besides several presentations, the course includes a series of 'hands on' activities so that the participants will obtain practical skills.  Originally developed for researchers and clinicians in low-income countries, the material is applicable to a broad range of health information professionals and also would provide resources that could be utilized in future instructional settings.

Course Structure/Material Content: The course consists of three presentations - an overview titled 'How to Write a Scientific Paper', a bibliography of 'Web-based Resources' and a discussion prompted by a series of 'Frequently Asked Questions.' The 'hands on' exercises include the completion of 'Structured Abstracts' plus the selection of keywords, completion of bibliographic citations using the Vancouver Style and, with an abstract and the scope information from journals, the selection of a specific journal to submit the article.
