ICML 2009: Library Tours: Queensland State Library
The State Library of Queensland was established by the Queensland Government in 1902 to serve as the preeminent repository of information that houses the state’s documentary heritage, major reference and research collections, and acts as an advocate and partner with public libraries across Queensland. Recently redeveloped, the building opened to the public at South Bank Cultural Centre in 2006. Designed by the Brisbane firm Donovan Hill in collaboration with Peddle Thorp architects, the redevelopment more than doubled the size of the previous Library and comprise both a refurbishment and an extension of the pre-existing 1988 building. In October 2007, the State Library of Queensland building was voted Australia’s ‘Building of the Year’ at the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Awards ceremony in Alice Springs.
